Qie and his research partners stressed the need to stop fragmentation, says David Gaveau, who developed an interactive map showing the scope and location of deforestation in Borneo and what causes it.
A new version of the map, launched last November, allows users to explore additional data on the location and ownership of palm oil processing plants. This feature helps to get a better picture of the industry's impact on forests.
Former CIFOR Main Scientist Terry Sunderland (now at the University of British Columbia) who housed Qie in Bogor, Indonesia during fieldwork and became a member of the study author, acknowledged Qie
"Becomes a very important foundation for future research."
"The advantage of this study, there is very little research in Asia on forests as carbon uptake, unlike in Latin America and Africa. Though there are enormous ecological and biogeographic differences in the forest type, although the impact of the disorder is similar, "Sunderland said.

"Fragmentation and climatic effects can disrupt the ability of forests to act as carbon uptake - and instead speed up the process."
"The forests of Borneo have been known to be very rich in species per hectare - we now know about their carbon values as well."
